Pictionary Word Generator
Ran out of Pictionary cards, or just want fresh words instead of the same deck you've used a hundred times? This free Pictionary word generator picks a random word or phrase for you, sorted by category and difficulty, so you can jump straight into the game with no board, no cards and no phone app required. Pick a category below (Animals, Movies & TV, Everyday Objects, Actions, Food & Drink, or Kids), choose a difficulty, and hit "Get a word" to reveal your first prompt. Prefer to draw for a set amount of time? Turn on the built-in round timer, choosing 30, 60, 90 or 120 seconds, so nobody has to keep track of a stopwatch on their phone while their team is guessing. If you'd rather prep a stack of words ahead of time (for a big group, a classroom, or a party where you want printed cards), switch to "Print a word list" mode and generate 10 to 30 words at once, ready to print or copy.

How to Use This Pictionary Word Generator
The generator above works the same way whether you're setting up a quick round with two people or running a full party with four teams. Here's the exact flow:
- Pick a category from the dropdown. Random Mix pulls from every category at once, or narrow it down to Animals, Movies & TV, Everyday Objects, Actions & Verbs, Food & Drink, or the family-friendly Kids set.
- Choose a difficulty: Any, Easy, Medium, or Hard. Easy words are short and concrete (Dog, Cake, Sun); Hard words take more creative drawing (Chameleon, Post-credits scene, Multitask).
- Decide how you want to play. "Play now" reveals one word at a time with a Next Word button, or "Print a word list" generates a batch of 10-30 words you can print or copy for later.
- Optional: turn on the round timer (30/60/90/120 seconds) before you hit Get a word, then press Start once the drawer has seen their word and is ready to begin.
- When the round ends, hit Get a word again for the next player. The generator won't repeat a word until you've seen every word in that category and difficulty at least once.
Choose Your Category
Seven categories cover most Pictionary and general drawing-game nights. Mixing categories keeps rounds unpredictable; sticking to one category is a good way to build a themed party (an Animals-only round for a kids' birthday, a Movies & TV round for a game night with film buffs).
- Random Mix: pulls from Animals, Movies & TV, Everyday Objects, Actions and Food & Drink all at once. The default, and the closest match to a classic Pictionary card deck.
- Animals: from easy ones like Dog and Cat up to trickier draws like Chameleon and Platypus.
- Movies & TV: broad screen concepts (Superhero, Robot, Villain) rather than specific copyrighted titles, so nobody needs to have seen a particular film to guess.
- Everyday Objects: household items, from Chair and Cup up to Corkscrew and Fire extinguisher.
- Actions & Verbs: things you act out or draw as a scene (Run, Juggle, Brush teeth, Procrastinate).
- Food & Drink: from Pizza and Apple up to Charcuterie board and Fondue.
- Kids: a separate, deliberately simple set (Sun, Star, Balloon, Rainbow) for younger players. See the full Pictionary words for kids guide if you're planning a kids' party specifically.
Pick a Difficulty Level
Every word in every category (except Kids, which is intentionally easy throughout) is tagged Easy, Medium or Hard. The table below shows what to expect at each level so your group can agree on a setting before you start. Mixed-age groups often do best on "Any", which blends all three.
Difficulty Level Reference
| Level | Best for | Example words |
|---|---|---|
| Easy | Kids, first-time players, warm-up rounds | Dog, Cake, Sun, Run, Chair |
| Medium | Most mixed-age groups, the default party pace | Kangaroo, Villain, Backpack, Juggle, Sandwich |
| Hard | Experienced players, adult game nights, tiebreaker rounds | Platypus, Post-credits scene, Fire extinguisher, Procrastinate, Charcuterie board |
How to Play Pictionary With This Generator
You don't need the physical board game to play a full round of Pictionary. A timer (built in above) and this generator are enough. Here's a simple version that works for four or more people:
- Split into two or more teams of at least two players each.
- Agree on a round length (60 seconds is the classic default, see the timer above) and how many rounds you'll play.
- One player from the drawing team clicks Get a word and looks at the word alone. Nobody else on their team should see it.
- Start the timer. The drawer draws only, using no letters, numbers, spoken words, or gestures, while their team shouts out guesses.
- If the team guesses correctly before time runs out, they score a point. If not, no point, and play passes to the next team.
- Rotate the drawer each round so everyone gets a turn, and click Get a word again for the next round.
Tips for Hosting a Great Pictionary Night
A few small choices make a big difference in how fun a round feels:
- Agree on the difficulty level as a group before you start, rather than mid-round. It keeps things fair.
- For a themed party (holiday, birthday, office event), stick to one category the whole night instead of Random Mix.
- Switch to "Print a word list" mode the night before a big event so you have a ready stack of words on paper, no phone or laptop needed at party time.
- If your group skews younger, use the Kids category, or set difficulty to Easy across every category.
- Need more structured party themes and category ideas beyond the built-in list? See Pictionary ideas & themes for holiday, office and classroom-specific lists.
Why Use a Word Generator Instead of the Board Game Cards
The physical Pictionary board game only ships with a fixed set of cards. Once your group has played through them a few times, the same words start repeating and the surprise disappears. A generator solves that by drawing from a much larger, constantly-shuffled pool, and adds a few things the printed cards can't: a category filter so you can run a themed round, a difficulty setting so a mixed-age group can agree on a fair challenge level, and (unlike every generator we compared while building this page) a built-in round timer, so nobody needs a separate stopwatch app running on their phone during the game. If you'd rather see the full word bank instead of one at a time, the Pictionary words list page lays out hundreds of words by category and difficulty for reference or printing.
Random Word Generator for Drawing Games, Not Just Pictionary
Plenty of people land on this page looking for a general random word generator for drawing rather than the specific board game: a random noun generator for sketching practice, a prompt source for a warm-up exercise in an art class, or words for a home-brew guessing game with house rules that don't match official Pictionary at all. All of that works here without any extra setup, since the category and difficulty filters are just as useful for "give me something to draw" as they are for a competitive team game. Art teachers use the Random Mix or Everyday Objects category as a quick five-minute sketching warm-up; team-building facilitators use Actions & Verbs for a wordless-charades icebreaker; a solo artist looking to break out of a drawing rut can hit Get a word on Hard and treat it as a daily prompt. None of that requires teams, scoring, or even a second person in the room.
Printable Pictionary Cards, Without Buying a New Deck
If what you actually want is something closer to a physical card deck, a stack of words you can hand out, cut into strips, or drop into a jar for people to draw blind, "Print a word list" mode is built for exactly that. Generate a batch (10, 15, 20 or 30 words), and either print the page directly (the print view hides every button and control, leaving just a clean numbered list) or copy the list to your clipboard to paste into a document, a spreadsheet, or a party-planning app. Because the list is freshly shuffled every time you click Generate list, you can print a completely different set for next month's game night in a few seconds, instead of being stuck with the same 500 cards a boxed game ships with. This is also the fastest way to prep a large event: generate two or three separate lists ahead of time, one per difficulty or one per category, and print them all before guests arrive.
